What should you do after a bone graft?

A bone graft rebuilds bone so the area can support a future restoration such as an implant. These steps protect the graft while it heals.

Bite on the Gauze

Keep gentle, steady pressure on the gauze for the first hour to help a clot form. Replace it if it becomes soaked.

Do Not Disturb the Site

Avoid touching, rinsing, spitting, or probing the area for the first day so the graft material stays in place.

Skip Straws and Smoking

Avoid straws, smoking, and vaping for several days. Suction and smoke can disturb the graft and slow healing.

Manage Swelling

Use a cold compress on the cheek for the first day, twenty minutes on and twenty minutes off, to limit swelling.

Eat Soft and Cool Foods

Choose soft, cool foods for the first few days and chew away from the graft site.

Take Medication as Directed

Take any prescribed antibiotics or pain medication exactly as directed and finish the full course.

Rinse Gently After Day One

After the first day, rinse gently with warm salt water a few times a day, especially after meals.

Protect the Sinus

If your graft involved the sinus, do not blow your nose forcefully, and sneeze with your mouth open for about two weeks.

What does bone graft recovery look like day by day?

Most swelling peaks in the first two to three days and then improves. Here is what to expect as the area heals.

First 24 hours
Bite on gauze as needed, rest, and use a cold compress. Avoid rinsing, straws, and smoking so the clot and graft stay protected.
Days 2 to 3
Swelling and soreness peak, then begin to ease. Start gentle warm salt water rinses and keep eating soft, cool foods.
First week
Discomfort settles and you can return to most foods as comfort allows. Keep the area clean and avoid hard or crunchy foods.
Several months
The graft integrates with your natural bone over a few months before the area is ready for the next step, such as an implant.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take a bone graft to heal?+
The gum surface heals in a couple of weeks, but the graft integrates with your own bone over several months before the area is ready for the next step.
Can I eat after a bone graft?+
Yes, stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days and chew away from the site. Avoid straws, which can disturb the graft.
Is some swelling normal after a bone graft?+
Yes, mild to moderate swelling that peaks around the second or third day is expected. Swelling that keeps increasing after that should be checked.
What should I avoid after a bone graft?+
Avoid smoking, straws, forceful rinsing, and poking the site, since these can dislodge the graft and slow healing.
What if I feel small particles in my mouth?+
Feeling a few tiny granules in the first days can be normal. Do not pick at the area, and call us if a large amount comes loose.
