What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic and restorative treatment that repairs chipped, cracked, worn, gapped, or discolored teeth by applying tooth-colored composite resin directly to the tooth. The resin is sculpted by hand, hardened with a curing light, and polished to match your natural enamel, so the tooth looks whole again rather than repaired. Most cases are completed in a single visit, with no laboratory, no temporary, and usually no anesthetic.

You may also see it called teeth bonding, tooth bonding, or composite bonding. When it is applied across several teeth to reshape an entire smile, it is commonly marketed as composite veneers. The material never changes. What changes is how many teeth are treated and how much of each tooth is rebuilt, and that is what sets the price.

How Much Does Dental Bonding Cost?

Bonding is priced per tooth, and what you pay depends on how much of each tooth is being rebuilt. Repairing one chipped edge and resurfacing a full smile are different procedures, so we quote them separately.

Edge Bonding
Chips, worn edges, small gaps, and isolated spots. One visit, usually no anesthetic.
Cost$150–$350 per tooth
Appointment1 visit
InsuranceOften, when restorative
Composite Bonding
Composite across several teeth to reshape a whole smile. Commonly marketed as composite veneers.
Cost$600–$1,200 per tooth
Appointments1–2 visits
Full arch availableYes

Insurance and Financing

When a tooth is chipped, cracked, or decayed, bonding is a restorative repair and insurance often covers part of the fee. Bonding on an undamaged tooth is cosmetic and is typically not covered. We verify your benefits before treatment begins.

The Two Types of Dental Bonding

Both use the same tooth-colored composite. The difference is how much of the tooth is being rebuilt, and that is what determines the appointment length, the cost, and whether insurance applies.

Edge Bonding

Composite is added only where the tooth is damaged or uneven, most often along the biting edge of a front tooth. Nothing is drilled away in most cases, so the treatment is additive and reversible. This is what most people mean when they say dental bonding, and it is the right starting point for a chipped corner, an edge worn flat from grinding, or a small gap between the front teeth.

Composite Bonding

Composite is layered across the full visible surface of several teeth so the smile is redesigned as a set rather than repaired one tooth at a time. This is the treatment commonly marketed as composite veneers, and it is a cosmetic case rather than a repair. Shape, length, and color are planned as one result, sculpted by hand in-office with no laboratory involved, and full arch treatment is available when the case calls for it.

What to Expect at Your Bonding Appointment

Step 01

Shade Match

We match the composite to your surrounding enamel in natural light. Whitening, if you want it, happens first.

Step 02

Placement

Composite is applied in thin layers and hardened with a curing light, shaped by hand. Usually no anesthetic.

Step 03

Shape and Polish

The edge is contoured to match the neighboring teeth, your bite is checked, and the tooth is polished.

How Long Does Dental Bonding Last?

We will not quote you a number, because it depends almost entirely on you. Two patients can have identical work done on the same day and get very different results. What we will do is tell you at your visit whether your bite and your habits make you a good candidate.

What extends it

  • ✓A balanced bite
  • ✓A night guard if you grind
  • ✓Not using teeth as tools
  • ✓Coffee and red wine in moderation
  • ✓Keeping regular cleanings

What wears it down

  • ✕Grinding and clenching
  • ✕Nail biting and chewing ice
  • ✕Heavy staining habits
  • ✕An edge-to-edge bite
  • ✕Skipping recall visits

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Bonding Questions, Answered

Straight answers on cost, insurance, comfort, and results at Albert Dental in Overland Park and Olathe.

How much does dental bonding cost in Overland Park and Olathe?

›
Edge bonding is $150 to $350 per tooth and composite bonding is $600 to $1,200 per tooth at Albert Dental. Pricing is the same at our Overland Park and Olathe offices. We verify your insurance first. Call (913) 948-9488 or (913) 247-1315. See our full dental bonding pricing.

Does dental insurance cover dental bonding?

›
Often yes, when the tooth is chipped, cracked, or decayed, because bonding is then a restorative repair. Purely cosmetic bonding is usually not covered. Albert Dental verifies your benefits before treatment begins at both our Overland Park and Olathe offices. See payment options.

How long does dental bonding last?

›
It depends on your bite and your habits, which is why Albert Dental will not quote a single number. Grinding, nail biting, and heavy staining shorten it, while a balanced bite and a night guard extend it. We will tell you what to expect at your Overland Park or Olathe visit.

Does dental bonding hurt?

›
Most edge bonding requires no anesthetic, because little or no natural tooth structure is removed. If decay is treated at the same time, the area is numbed first. Patients at Albert Dental in Overland Park and Olathe describe the appointment as comfortable and return to normal immediately.

Can dental bonding fix a chipped tooth?

›
Yes. Repairing a chipped front tooth is the most common reason patients come to Albert Dental for bonding. Composite is shaped by hand and polished to match, usually in one visit. See our chipped tooth page, or call (913) 948-9488 in Overland Park or (913) 247-1315 in Olathe.

What are the downsides of dental bonding?

›
Composite stains faster than porcelain, chips under heavy grinding, and does not last as long as porcelain veneers. It cannot be whitened once placed. Albert Dental will tell you honestly whether bonding suits your case at your Overland Park or Olathe consultation.

Is dental bonding the same as composite veneers?

›
They use the same material. Composite veneers is the term used when bonding is applied across several teeth to redesign a smile, while repairing one chipped edge is a smaller and far cheaper procedure. Albert Dental offers both at our Overland Park and Olathe offices. Both are explained on our dental bonding page.

Can dental bonding close a gap between front teeth?

›
Yes, for small to moderate gaps. Larger gaps are better closed with Invisalign first, because overwidening teeth looks bulky and creates dark triangles near the gum line. Albert Dental will advise which approach suits you at your Overland Park or Olathe visit.

What happens if dental bonding chips or breaks?

›
Bonded composite can usually be repaired in the chair in one visit rather than replaced, which is a real advantage over porcelain. Albert Dental is open seven days a week at both locations. Call (913) 948-9488 in Overland Park or (913) 247-1315 in Olathe.

How long does a dental bonding appointment take?

›
A single tooth generally takes 30 to 60 minutes at Albert Dental. Full-smile composite cases run longer and may be split across two visits. There is no dental laboratory involved, so you leave our Overland Park or Olathe office with the finished result the same day.

What is the cheapest way to fix a chipped tooth?

›
Edge bonding is usually the most affordable repair at $150 to $350 per tooth, and insurance often covers part of it when the tooth is damaged. Albert Dental finishes most chips in one visit. Call (913) 948-9488 in Overland Park or (913) 247-1315 in Olathe.

How much is a full set of teeth bonding?

›
Composite bonding is $600 to $1,200 per tooth at Albert Dental, and a full smile usually covers six to ten upper teeth. We quote your exact case before starting at our Overland Park or Olathe office. See dental bonding for the full breakdown.
