What should you do after dental implant surgery?

Protecting the surgical site in the first days gives your implant the best start.

Bite on Gauze

Keep gentle pressure on the gauze over the site for 30 to 60 minutes. Light oozing is normal for the first day.

Ice for Swelling

Apply ice packs to the outside of your face for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off during the first 24 hours.

Do Not Disturb the Site

Avoid touching, poking, or rinsing the implant area for the first 24 hours so the clot can stabilize.

Avoid Smoking

Avoid smoking and tobacco entirely while you heal. Smoking is a leading cause of implant failure.

Eat Soft, Cool Foods

Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days and chew on the opposite side. Avoid hard or crunchy foods.

Take Medication as Directed

Take any prescribed antibiotics and pain medication as directed. Ibuprofen can help with discomfort.

Gentle Oral Hygiene

Avoid the implant site for 24 hours. After that, rinse gently with warm salt water a few times a day.

Watch for Problems

Some swelling is normal. If pain, bleeding, or swelling worsens after day 3, call us.

What does dental implant recovery look like day by day?

Healing happens in stages. Here is a general guide to what most people can expect.

Day 1
Bite gently on gauze and rest with your head elevated. Use ice on and off, and leave the surgical site alone so the clot can form.
Days 2 to 3
Swelling and soreness usually peak. Begin gentle warm salt water rinses, eat soft foods, and take pain relief as directed.
First week
Discomfort eases and the soft tissue begins to heal around the implant. Keep the area clean and avoid hard foods.
Weeks to months
The implant fuses with the bone over the next several weeks to months before the final tooth is placed.

What is normal, and when should you call us?

This is normal

  • Light oozing for the first 24 hours
  • Swelling and soreness that peak around day 2 to 3
  • Mild bruising on the cheek or jaw
  • Tenderness that slowly improves each day

Call us right away if

  • Heavy bleeding that does not slow with firm gauze pressure
  • Pain or swelling that increases after day 3
  • A fever, or pus or a bad taste from the site
  • The implant feeling loose, or numbness that does not go away
