What should you do after a gum graft?

A gum graft covers exposed roots and restores gum tissue. These steps protect the graft and the area it was taken from while they heal.

Leave the Area Alone

Do not pull on your lip or cheek to look at the graft, and avoid touching it with your tongue or fingers.

Do Not Brush the Site

Avoid brushing or flossing the surgical area until we clear you. Keep cleaning the rest of your mouth as usual.

Manage Swelling

Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek for the first day, twenty minutes on and twenty minutes off.

Eat Soft and Cool Foods

Choose soft, cool foods for the first few days and chew away from the graft. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or seedy foods.

Skip Straws and Smoking

Avoid straws, smoking, and vaping, which slow healing and can disturb the graft.

Rinse Gently if Directed

If we recommend a rinse, use it gently. Do not swish forcefully near the site.

Protect Any Dressing

If a protective dressing or stent was placed, leave it in place and call us if it comes off early.

Take Medication as Directed

Take any prescribed medication or recommended pain relief exactly as directed.

What does gum graft recovery look like day by day?

Most discomfort eases within the first week. Here is what to expect as the area heals.

First 24 hours
Rest and use a cold compress. Avoid disturbing the site, and stick to soft, cool foods.
Days 2 to 3
Swelling and tenderness peak, then improve. The graft and the donor area may feel sore, which is expected.
First two weeks
Discomfort settles. Keep avoiding the site when brushing until we clear you at your follow up.
Several weeks
The graft blends with the surrounding gum over the following weeks. Color and shape continue to mature.
